If you’re a student from outside the United Arab Emirates who’s looking for an affordable place to study medicine, UAE has some of the best medical educational institutions in the world.

It also has some of the cheapest MBBS training in the world which is why there is a huge influx of students from other countries each year.

The UAE’s medical education system is fairly straightforward:

The first year of study is done at the undergraduate level before being accepted into one of four government-accredited universities – University of Sharjah, University of Dubai, King Abdulaziz University, and the University of Medical Sciences & Health Sciences (UMS).

After completion of their first year they sit for the National Eligibility Test (N.E.T) which determines their admission to the second year and subsequent specialty courses.

It’s worth noting that there is no separate pre-med degree requirement in the UAE – many of the universities and colleges offer them but only with a very small number of places.

Several of the university’s main courses have been further accredited by the United States.

2. American University in Sharjah

Based in Sharjah, the third-largest city of the UAE, the American University of Sharjah is another private institution of higher education that was founded in 1997. It is located in the University City of Sharjah and is around 25km outside of Dubai.

The university has a student population exceeding 5500, of which international students come from more than 90 countries. Students have access to numerous cutting-edge facilities offered which are relatively modern as well with the university’s recent inception.

Additionally, foundation programs exist that further provide students with the necessary grounds for learning English, Arabic, and Mathematics where necessary. Additionally, the university is one of the few institutions with a high commitment towards research.

5. Khalifa University

Khalifa University was founded in 2007 and is located in the city of Abu Dhabi. It is a science-focused private institution of higher education and was initially founded with the goal of contributing to the country’s post-oil future.

The university currently has more than 3500 students studying its courses. Academically, it operates through a college of engineering that provides around 12 undergraduate bachelor’s programs as well as around 15 postgraduate programs, all of which are focused on different fields of engineering.

9. Canadian University of Dubai

As of 2019, the university has grown into a very popular university that provides studies for over 1500 students. It further maintains ties with the original university in Ontario and offers accredited degrees from both Canada and the UAE.

Students also have the opportunity to transfer to Canadian partner institutions at the end of their second year. Academically, it is comprised of four major faculties of study that include the departments of management, communication sciences, architecture/design, and engineering/technology.

UAE MBBS Tuition Fees and Accreditation

The cost of tuition fees for MBBS programs in UAE have been rising at an astronomical rate throughout the past decade.

For example, a student with a 2-year undergraduate degree program would pay about $700 per year ($6 thousand) for tuition fees at one of the aforementioned universities, which includes accommodation and food.

If they apply to enter the Master of Medicine program at the same university, they’ll have to pay an additional $2,000 (AED 8,000) per year for tuition fees and $7,000 (AED 32,000) per year for living expenses.

The UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research does not offer financial assistance to MBBS graduates which is why most of them will have a difficult time paying off their student loans and meet their monthly expenses.

There are approximately 50 medical schools in the UAE that provide courses at various levels. In addition to these publicly funded MBBS degree programs, there are also private medical colleges that offer medical degrees at very high tuition rates.

Who can study in UAE?

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research regulates and oversees all medical education in the country. As a result, all students must meet certain criteria before being granted a license to practice medicine in the UAE.

Why MBBS in UAE is so affordable?

The cost for 3-year bachelor degree studies at the King Abdulaziz University, also known as Khaleej University, is about $10,000 (AED 40,000)- per year which includes accommodation and food.

In addition to their government-funded universities there are private universities that provide MBBS degree programs in the region. These universities are fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research but most of them charge much higher tuition fees and do not offer financial assistance to students.

The private universities will provide you with a much better education but it’s important to remember that you are paying for that too.

  • Institute of Health Sciences, Ras Al Khaimah – registered in 2014 and approved by the MOH in 2015.
  • Arabian Gulf University – approved by the MOH since 2014.
  • Hamdan Medical College- approved by the MOH since 2014.
  • New Medical School in UAE – announced by Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in January 2011 to be built in the capital city of Abu Dhabi at an estimated cost of $3 billion (AED10 billion).

How to Obtain your Medical Degree in UAE:
